ABCs of closing is not “Always be closing.” It is “Always be credible.”

Without credibility, nothing you say or do matters.

Yet, credibility remains remarkably overlooked in early-stage sales interactions, a mistake that cripples’ countless sales efforts before they even begin.

Credibility is not just a box to tick; it’s the foundational element that determines whether potential buyers trust you enough to engage further.

According to a Persuasion Institute poll, credibility is the most crucial factor in establishing trust, with 44% of respondents identifying it as key—yet alarmingly, credibility was effectively established only 11.4% of the time. This gap represents a significant lost opportunity for salespeople and underscores a common strategic flaw in sales process.

Credibility is strategically essential early in the sales process because nothing you promise or say matters if prospects don’t believe you have the capability to deliver. If your credibility isn’t communicated immediately, prospects have zero reason to invest even a few minutes talking to you.

And let’s face it: why should they? With a few keystrokes on Google, your prospects can find countless providers and experts seemingly qualified to help them.

A brutal truth: most sales outreach today lacks any effective credibility statement. If anything is communicated at all, it’s often meaningless generalities like “we really care,” “we have great service,” or “we have 35 years of experience.” Such vague assurances are instantly forgotten or dismissed. They fail to elevate you from the cesspool of other sales reps clogging up your prospects’ minds, inboxes and voicemail.

Credibility is entirely subjective. Just as beauty lies in the eye of the beholder, credibility is in the mind of the buyer. Your prospects decide if you’re credible based on their perception—not yours. You must influence that perception proactively and immediately.

Establish Credibility to Stop Prospects in Their Tracks

Sales effectiveness pivots dramatically when you communicate specific, compelling credibility early in the sales process.

Prospects quickly make critical judgments: • “Does this person address a real problem I have?” • “Is this person or company worth my time?”

If prospects can’t quickly grasp your credibility, they’re gone. You have mere seconds—studies show less than 30 seconds, often just seven—to convince buyers you deserve their attention.

Credibility is defined in the buyer’s mind, not yours. They decide quickly, based on specifics you provide:

  • Names of recognized companies you’ve helped
  • Tangible results achieved
  • Specific benefits delivered to similar companies
  • Evidence of outcomes rather than vague promises

Stephen Covey, in his influential book The Speed of Trust, states, “Your credibility… depends upon your integrity, your intent, your capabilities, and your results.”

Salespeople must demonstrate this clearly, consistently, and immediately.

The common thread? Specifics, specifics, specifics. Specific details stick; generalities evaporate. Specifics immediately communicate credibility, distinguishing you from less capable providers or uninspired competitors.

Specifics boost credibility. Generalities lump you in with the rest.

Here’s a wake-up call question for every sales professional: how are your prospects supposed to know you are superior or more worthwhile than the other twenty salespeople calling them every week if you don’t explicitly communicate your credibility?

Upfront direct and powerful credibility statements are non-negotiable. Your prospects won’t—and shouldn’t—give time to someone whose qualifications or capabilities remain unclear. Give them a compelling reason to believe you’re different and more valuable from the mob pounding on their door.

Credibility does more than open doors—it determines every subsequent interaction:

  • It influences trust and rapport.
  • It boosts engagement, making prospects lean in rather than tune out.
  • It sets the foundation for ongoing interactions, making the sale process smoother and quicker.

Early credibility is pivotal to accelerating sales velocity because it directly impacts engagement, trust-building, and your opportunity for further interactions. Without establishing immediate credibility, you lose prospects’ attention before you’ve even started.

Remember this mantra: The ABCs of sales isn’t “Always Be Closing.” It’s “Always Be Credible.“
