The Problem with Most Cold Calling Opening Lines
Host: So Scott, let me ask you this question. What are some of the opening lines or techniques that you have found to be most effective when it comes to capturing that prospect’s interest within the first few seconds of that call?
Scott: It’s not so much that there are specific words that you say, because obviously for every campaign and who you’re calling, it’s going to be different. But there is a structure that I really believe in. And I want to rattle off a couple of examples.
A Better Approach: Lead with Credibility
Here is a sample from an environmental cleanup company, ring ring.
This is Dan. How can I help you? Hey, this is Scott from clean it up. We’re environmental experts. We’ve managed 41, 000 sites over 30 years for companies such as colossal company and mighty enterprises. If you might acquire assets, boom, boom, boom.
So what you see is as soon as people pick up the phone, what you’re communicating is, “Hey, this is what I do. And this is why I’m credible.” So you notice the specifics as to the 41, 000 sites in over 30 years.
Or you might take this one from a manufacturing project I did.
Hey, this is Scott from partner pro widget production, productivity specialists, and. Over 40 percent of global widget companies, including, big company, bigger company, and widget masters have selected us for more than 300 engagements over the last seven years.
Boom. So it’s the idea of, I feel it’s really important that up front, people must understand what you do, and that you’re credible. This is one of my most important discovery call tips: if you are speaking to a buyer, somebody who might actually write a check to you, and they grasp those things, they will continue to listen.
Why You Must Establish Credibility Immediately
I think it’s a big strategic mistake when people don’t get the “what we do” and “why we’re worthwhile” up front because they feel that it’s somehow being salesy, which I think is stupid to be frank.
Because that’s more of the caller’s issue than the prospect’s issue. The prospect’s trying to decide, is this caller worth me listening a bit more? Is this caller the same as the other 20 people who’ve called me this week who have wasted my time? Or is there something different or more profound or better with this person? That makes me want to listen.
So it’s not so much that there are specific words that work, but I really do believe, Paul, that there is a structure, a clarity of what you do. For effective B2B cold calling, people must put their credibility forward. I see so many companies with great histories, great successes, and they say nothing about it in the script, which to me is nuts, because it’s the specifics that really work in cold calling, not the generalities.
Conclusion: The Structure of a Successful Opening
Host: I love that answer, Scott. It’s a great answer. And as I’m listening to you break down the structure, it’s like you’re saying, this is who we are. This is the value we bring. This is how we do it. This is where we’ve done it before. These were the results that they got. And these are the clients that we’ve worked with. And just speaking to building that trust and credibility in a very short space of time, I think if you could script something like that, you’re absolutely going to get that person’s attention and keep them on the phone. Great answer.
Summary: To summarize, the most effective cold calling opening lines don’t rely on gimmicks, but on a clear structure that proves your worth. The key is to establish credibility within the first few seconds by highlighting specific, impressive facts about your company and its successes. By adopting this method, you can improve your sales call scripts and set more qualified discovery calls.
