Help buyers choose between you, competitors, doing nothing and other projects

In B2B sales, closing a deal isn’t just about proving your solution is better than a competitor’s. You’re also competing against inaction and the dozens of other initiatives fighting for your buyer’s attention and budget. If buyers can’t clearly see why your solution is the best use of their resources, they either choose something else—or do nothing at all.

Studies show that between 40% and 60% of B2B sales opportunities result in no decision. Why? Because buyers either fail to perceive a compelling difference between options or struggle to justify making a change.

A big part of your job is to help them choose—by sharply articulating your positioning and outcomes, addressing unconsidered needs, and clarifying the real cost of inaction.

Use Contrast to Make the Decision Clear

Buyers need to see distinct differences between your solution and all other options. If the contrast isn’t clear, the easiest decision is no decision. If any doubt about what to do remains, there will be no sale.

Here’s how to sharpen that contrast:

  • Properly positioning your solution against competitors, doing nothing and against other initiatives that could claim their time and money.
  • Frame the risks of inaction – Show the buyer what happens if they stay where they are. As their problems worsen, what will be the consequenes? What opportunities will they miss?
  • Showcase your unique value wedge – Emphasize the aspects of your solution that competitors can’t or won’t match.

Preempt objections and minimize distractions

Buyers will hesitate if hesitations, fears and doubts go unanswered or if they anticipate friction in implementation. Don’t wait and then have to overcome objections, get ahead of them:

  • Tackle fears of change head-on – Address concerns about disruption, cost, and internal buy-in before they become deal killers.
  • Present a cost of inaction analysis – Lay out the financial, operational, and competitive consequences of delaying a decision.
  • Simplify their decision process – Too many options create decision paralysis. Make the choice easy by guiding them through a logical evaluation of all their choices.
  • Equip buyers to advocate internally – Many decisions stall because internal stakeholders push back. Arm your champion with data, case studies, and clear business cases to make your solution the obvious choice

Discover unconsidered needs, find quick small wins, clarify outcomes

Your buyers may not fully understand the gaps in their current approach. Help them recognize these gaps.

If buyers can’t clearly see the quick small wins, big wins and bottom-line outcomes you will deliver to them, you increase the chance they will choose something else.

Our job is to help them choose from among all options, not just competitors or the status quo.

We need to help shift the buyer’s mindset from “Should we change” or “Should we do something else?” to “How soon can we reach these outcomes?”.

Make It easy to say yes

Winning in B2B sales isn’t just about proving your solution is better—it’s about making the decision process simple, compelling, and urgent. The easier you make it for buyers to see, justify, and commit to the change, the higher your win rate will be.

Don’t just sell your solution.
Provide the ability to choose decisively among all competing options.
When we do, close rates climb.
